I was CELEBRATING with one of my VIP clients this week about how far she has come in the past 3 months we have been working together to heal her adverse childhood experiences. I’ll be very honest here and say that entering into this level of healing isn’t always easy, as it means tapping into body sensations and emotions that may feel a little uncomfortable at first, but over time a person begins to welcome such discomforts and knows that they’re there to teach something very potent.It’s the gift in depression, in everything good, bad and ugly!!

Many of my clients are alternative medicine practitioners, energy healers, life coaches and body worker who have realised that in order to fill their practices and support their clients they need to heal their own core woundings.

When we stop feeling we also stop being able to listen to what our body wants.

The signalling mechanisms go off and we stop being a healthy human being. We go into low oxygen, low metabolism mode. (Hello person having trouble losing weight, whose immune system is weak and/or who can’t think clearly or find any creative juices. We need lots of oxygen to be a healthy human being.)

Our safety signals get thrown off. We start living in a stressed out survival state.(Hello person who is always afraid of putting themselves out there, and may be in a state of perpetual panic and anxiety about future events that haven’t happened yet, or past event that occurred a long time ago.)

Over time, this shows up in not just our health and biology, but as we become adults it seeps into how we think, work, create and connect.

This is what early and/or developmental trauma does to the grown up – those early strategies to stay safe and protect our being hang around forever, unless we address them. You cannot change what you don’t know is running your life and that is why working with my mindfulness change and purpose mapping processes is the foundation. It does not matter how good your money mentor or reiki healer is, if you don’t address the root cause of your pain, it will keep surfacing over and over again

Many of you who know my personal story of  how I healed myself of chronic depression and life threatening disease is what brought me to this space of assisting others with their health crisis. It took me a long time to realise that my purpose, when I aligned with my vital essence would never have emerged if I had not walked the path through the pain.

One of my favorite means to help my clients is through the ancient wisdom of Chinese Medicine,because it is all about energy flow, pathways, patterns and meridians. That when we can see the inter connectedness of all things, that how we tend to our internal gardens is a reflection of the outer garden and that the survival of the planet depends on each us practicing radical self care, love and allowance.

April is the time we move from the lungs and into peak of large intestine time, the Metal element, the emotion of surrender, grief and letting go.
Its Autumn in the southern hemisphere and an invitation to shed our “leaves” and move into the roots as we ready our body for the colder months.
In the North, you are moving into Wood element, Spring and a time associated with the Liver and Gall Bladder systems.

But in Chinese Medicine, the Liver doesn’t just help us digest fat, filter out toxins, and synthesize hormones.
It also helps us to process emotions, governs vision in both the literal and metaphysical sense, and helps us put plans into motion.
It has to do with planning,creativity, flexibility, decision-making and having the heart (courage) to move forward with ease and grace.

The Beauty of Authenticity

www.solitaryalignment.comMost of us walk through the world craving truth and validity, wearing masks to
hide our intentions and insecurities. We post pictures capturing flashes of how
we’d like to be perceived, and delete anything that might prove contradictory.
We manufacture images built from aspirational notions, and hope no one notices
the holes in our Swiss cheese.

It’s a high-wire routine, and many times we’re left swaying on a safety net—
feeling anything but safe—and wondering how we fell. But, what if we removed
the mirage and abandoned the ruse? What if we stopped filtering our words
and screening our thoughts?

The consequences would be disastrous, right? How would we manipulate one another,
gaining what we want by leaving a trail of unsuspecting victims in our path?
How else could we construct perfect alibis and hide honest opinions inside of false compliments?

I’m not claiming this transition would succeed without bruises, and I don’t know if it’s
even feasible in a technologically translucent society. But, beating the bedrock to expose a
fallacious foundation may not be the worst use of our united efforts.

Games are fun, and they serve their purpose at birthday parties, baby showers,
and wine-guzzling get-togethers. But, an existence safeguarding every word and
action is a life spent toiling against the grain. Leave the fantasy on stage,
and say what’s in your heart. It’s a dose of fresh air in a crammed elevator,
and it feels fantastic.

Old habits die hard, but allowing even a modicum of legitimacy to creep into your vocalized
notions will give the those tiny roots permission to sprout.
Before long, we’ll all be standing atop a tree of transparency…or not.

I love patterns and pathways, they are the true nature of life itself.
Some call them biomimetic mimicking systems
Others sacred geometry
others quantum physics
I use the feedback from the
very nature of patterns in my work
with chronic stress, anxiety and
depression and how non specific disease shows up.
Its the way the body talks and expresses itself,
that gives me accurate feedback and a pathway to turn pain into
purpose driven life.

This past week, I had a series of clients book sessions
for the animal companions that were “out of nowhere”
pooping in strange, undesirable places.

Each case and solutions were unique but the gift
in all of these cats and dogs was a very clear
message that it is time for humans to stop the shit
and choose a more aligned conscious way of living.
Animals don’t blurry the edges, bury their heads
in the sand, pretend everything is ok?
They stay present just like our bodies,
when they are afraid they express fear,
when they are angry or have their boundaries
cross they tell us to back off.
Simply they don’t shit where they eat.

They want us to STOP the madness now not
later.
They want us to make more conscious choices,
to stop making excuses and putting things off.
They want us to wake up and sometimes they are
willing to go to extreme lengths even at the cost of
their own health to get us to change our toxic ways,
get out of our heads and into living.

As we transition into Spring or Autumn, notice how your
body mind feels, where there is tension, where
daily rituals and flow need to change.
There is a season for all things, tread gently on the
Earth, tend to your inner garden, listen to the subtle nudges
your body, your animals friends and your environments are
gifting you and then…..
respond softly, with kindness and an honouring of
the seasons of change.

Depression is A Disease of Civilization: Hunter-Gatherers Hold the Key to the Cure

Depression is a global epidemic. It is the main driver behind suicide, which now claims more than a million lives per year worldwide. One in four Americans will suffer from clinical depression within their lifetimes, and the rate is increasing with every generation.

It robs people of sleep, energy, focus, memory, sex drive and their basic ability to experience the pleasures of life, says author of The Depression Cure Stephen Ildari. It can destroy people’s desire to love, work, play and even their will to live. If left unchecked it can cause permanent brain damage.

Depression lights up the pain circuitry of the brain to such an extent that many of Ildari’s psychiatric patients have called it torment, agony and torture. “Many begin to look to death as a welcome means of escape,” he said in a Ted Talks presentation.

But depression is not a natural disease. It is not an inevitable part of being human. Ildari argues, like many diseases, depression is a disease of civilization. It’s a disease caused by a high-stress, industrialized, modern lifestyle that is incompatible with our genetic evolution.

Depression is the result of a prolonged stress-response, Ildari said. The brain’s “runaway stress response” – as he calls it – is similar to the fight or flight response, which evolved to help our ancestors when they faced predators or other physical dangers. The runaway stress response required intense physical activity for a few seconds, a few minutes, or – in extreme cases – a few hours.

“The problem is for many people throughout the Western world, the stress response goes on for weeks, months and even years at a time, and when it does that, it’s incredibly toxic,” Ildari said.

Living under continually stressful conditions – as many modern humans do – is disruptive to neuro-chemicals like dopamine and seratonin, which can lead to sleep disturbance, brain damage, immune dysregulation and inflammation, Ildari says.

Civilization is the disease

hadza-dance-tanzania_13187_990x742Epidemiologists have now identified a long list of other stress-related diseases as “diseases of civilization” – diabetes, atherosclerosis, asthma, allergies, obesity and cancer. These diseases are rampant throughout the developed world, but virtually non-existent among modern-day aboriginal peoples.

In a study of 2000 Kaluli aborigines from Papua New Guinea, only one marginal case of clinical depression was found. Why? Because the Kaluli lifestyle is very similar to our hunter-gatherer ancestors’ lifestyle that lasted for nearly 2 million years before agriculture, Ildari said.

“99.9 percent of the human experience was lived in a hunter-gatherer context,” he added. “Most of the selection pressures that have sculpted and shaped our genomes are really well adapted for that environment and that lifestyle.”

In view of nearly 3 million years of hominid existence, since homo habilis first began use of stone tools, our genus has undergone rapid environmental change since the advent of agriculture about 12,000 years ago. And in the last 200 years, since the industrial revolution, our species has had to cope with what Ildari calls “radical environmental mutation.”

While our environment has radically mutated, our human genome is essentially the same as it was 200 years ago, Ildari says. “That’s only eight generations. It’s not enough time [for significant genetic adaptations].”

“There’s a profound mismatch between the genes we carry, the bodies and brains that they are building, and the world that we find ourselves in,” he said. “We were never designed for the sedentary, indoor, socially isolated, fast-food-laden, sleep-deprived frenzied pace of modern life.”

 

The Cure

Though he’s not entirely opposed to medication, Ildari says we can throw all the drugs in the world at the depression epidemic, and it won’t make a dent.

Anti depressant use has gone up 300 percent in the last 20 years, but the rate of depression has continued to increase. One in nine Americans over age 12 is currently taking an antidepressant, and one in five have been on them at some point.

The answer, Ildari says, is a change in lifestyle. He says the results of his six step program have exceeded his wildest dreams:

1. Exercise

2. Omega 3 Fatty Acids

3. Sunlight

4. Healthy Sleep

5. Anti-ruminative activity

6. Social connection

In his presentation, he emphasized the importance of exercise and social connection, as they are two of the hardest parts of the program for modern Americans.

Exercise is ‘not natural’

Ildari says the results of exercise on depression are so powerful that if they could be reduced into a pill, it would be the most expensive pill on earth. The problem is 60 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Ildari says it’s not their fault. Between long days at work and household and family responsibilities to attend to, who has the time or energy to hit the gym?

The dirty little secret about exercise, Ildari says, is “it is not natural.” We are designed to be physically active “in the service of adapted goals,” not to exercise on a hamster wheel.

Hunter gatherers get four or more hours of vigorous physical activity every day, but if you ask them they will tell you they don’t exercise, Ildari says. “They don’t work out. Working out would be crazy to them. They live.”

“When you put a lab rat on a treadmill … it will squat down on it’s haunches, and the treadmill starts to rub the fur and the skin right off it’s back side,” he said. “When you stare at a piece of exercise equipment, there is a part of your brain that’s screaming out ‘Don’t do it! You’re not going anywhere!’”

If you can’t go out gathering your own nuts and berries or hunting your own meat, Ildari recommends brisk walking with a friend. Walking for 30 minutes, three times a week, has better effects on depression than Zoloft, he said.

Social Connection

Another huge factor in modern depression is the lack of social connection in our modern nuclear-family bubbles. “Face-time with our loved ones puts the breaks on our stress response,” Ildari says.

The problem is we’ve replaced face-time with screen-time. “Our hunter gatherer ancestors spent all day every day in the company of their loved ones.”

Unfortunately illness, including mental illness, triggers people to isolate themselves, which only makes depression worse.

“Resist the urge to withdraw,” Ildari says, “because when you’re ill, your body tells you to shut down and pull away. When you have the flu, that’s adaptive. When you have depression, it’s the worst thing in the world you could do.”

Rewilding and Tribal Living

What Ildari didn’t mention in his Ted Talk is how difficult his cure is for most modern humans to attain. Sure, we’d all like more fresh air, sunlight, exercise, a better diet, better sleep, less monotonous work, and more interaction with loved ones, but who has time for all that?

I’m stuck here staring at my screen typing about it in an effort to make a living for myself, and many of you don’t even have time to read this article because you have 50+ hours-a-week jobs of your own. Meanwhile, immediate-return hunter-gatherers work an average of 17 hours a week. In this world, we certainly can’t just quit our jobs to be less stressed, when the financial stress would create more stress.

In my opinion, the answer lies in baby steps. Baby steps away from dependence on civilization, and toward nature, earth skills, and self-sustaining communal living.

Its about remembering to come back to your heart, your true nature and loving where you are.

Getting back to your roots, following an ancestral diet, listening to your body, going with the flow of our natural cycles with nature, trusting your gut knowing are the keys to set you free.

You are not broken, there is nothing to fix, there is only a return to the present moment of loving what is.

one of the hardest things

for me to witness as I mentor women.

 

It’s hearing a woman

blame herself for

the behavior of someone else.

 

“If I was smart enough,

rich enough, connected enough,

eloquent enough”

 

Then they would hire me/ partner with me/

work with me/ fill in the blank.

 

Here’s what I mean:

Maybe you want to start speaking to audiences,

but don’t think you are eloquent enough,

 

or maybe you want to start offering

workshops and retreats but you don’t feel

like you are connected enough,

 

or you might want to raise your rates

but are not sure you know enough to be

paid more.

 

Now I’m not saying we can’t

get better at what we do.

But there’s also a standard

that suffocates.

 

You can get another certification,

more training, read more books,

get plastic surgery or whatever your

“good enough” cup of tea is.

 

But ultimately in this

scenario you are giving your power

over to someone else.

 

They might struggle with commitment,

or consistency, or showing up for themselves,

and we become willing to give away

our power in the hope that

someone will become different, so

I started writing this blog on Monday and here we are at Friday and I am still going at it! The curiosity of the question “who am I being today?” is one I love to give the mind/ego a job in supporting the creative mind to do just that create from a space of possibility and wonder.

Clearing space the night before by intentionally envisioning the state of flow I am aiming for the next day is one of the easiest and nourishing ways to feed the mind and invite in regenerative deep sleep.
